Heads up, longtime KFC fans: Only a little more than a month after it reintroduced potato wedges to its menus in what it is calling its “Comeback Era,” the fried chicken chain is bringing back another long-clamored-for, long-retired fan favorite: KFC’s Original Honey BBQ sauce.
Described online by one misty-eyed fan as “thick, tangy [and] slightly spicy” and another as a “perfect blend of sweetness and smokiness,” KFC’s Original Honey BBQ sauce was initially introduced in the late 1990s.
Following its launch, the sauce became a favorite, featured on KFC’s popular Honey BBQ chicken wings. After it was discontinued in the early 2000s, however, the sauce grew into a full-on “obsession” among its fans. In the intervening years, it has inspired “petitions, thousands of mentions across social channels, and even copycat recipes from desperate fans,” the brand says.
KFC says it heard the clamor from Original Honey BBQ’s many fans “loud and clear” and is “finally giving the people what they want.”

This time, KFC will make the sauce available nationwide on basically any menu item, including pieces of chicken (including, yes, wings), tenders or a KFC Chicken Sandwich beginning October 6.
“KFC’s Original Honey BBQ wasn’t just a menu offering, it became a cultural touchstone that fans have been craving and asking us to bring back for years,” Catherine Tan-Gillespie, president of KFC U.S., says in a news release. “What better way to continue our KFC comeback than to bring back this legendary flavor and reintroduce it in a bigger and bolder way — on everything.”
KFC is featuring the sauce as part of an Original Honey BBQ Combo, which includes two pieces of KFC’s Extra Crispy fried chicken dunked in Original Honey BBQ sauce, as well as a side, biscuit and medium beverage.
It’s also introducing a “throwback” deal on the KFC Chicken Sandwich: Featuring an Extra Crispy chicken breast filet topped with pickles and regular or spicy mayo, on a toasted brioche bun, the sandwich will be available for $3.99 for a limited time, while supplies last. The price, KFC, says has “not [been] seen since the ’90s.”
